We received an enquiry regarding the possible repair of a beautiful and luxurious cushion. The piece was a designer item from House of Hackney. The label is renowned for the individuality of its designs and is a forerunner in high-quality soft furnishings. Its Saber large plush velvet cushion, inspired by Tibetan culture, is particularly striking. We also happily noted their commitment to environmental issues, which is in line with our own values. Our customer sent the damaged piece to us following its unfortunate altercation with the family dog. After a thorough inspection, our cushion repair specialist prescribed several remedies. To return the cushion as closely as possible to its original condition, they needed to repair its trimmings, replace the zip and fit new tassels. It also needed dry cleaning, including a full exterior clean. Starting with some tears in the velvet, our expert went about applying intricate ladder stitching to re-join the gaps as subtly but robustly as possible.
With the damage to the exterior no longer visible, they then moved on to replacing the zip. It had been damaged beyond repair by the dog’s teeth and would no longer close. After placing a sturdy new zip matched as closely as possible to the original, it was time to approach the tassels. This was one of the cushion’s most unique features, so had to be managed carefully. The shape, size, colour and quality of the replacement tassels had to match the damaged ones. Following the stitching, the cushion was ready for thorough spot and dry cleaning. Bioma, our head of spot cleaning, worked on the piece to carefully lift stains on both the interior and exterior.
With our cushion repair magic applied, the Saber plush velvet cushion was ready to be presented to its relieved owner. They were taken aback by the transformation and very pleased they would not have to replace it. They also made us a special promise to keep this fabulous piece from their lively pooch from now on.
